Lockdown Thoughts

by Paul Edmunds on January 09, 2021

Hi,

I’m Nicky and along with my husband Paul, run Insideout.  I thought it was time to do an introduction for those of you who are new to us and share some of my current thinking.

Paul and I met when I was 18, gosh, that really is some time ago now.  Our oldest child Ben is now that very age, and making the most of an extremely different environment to the one we enjoyed, all those years ago.  It was the age of smoking in pubs, dancing in clubs and just enjoying life and all it through at us.

Our stores and online shop focus on accessories, home décor, puzzles and other beautiful gifts.  We are passionate about growing our handmade product ranges and work with many local makers as well as larger suppliers.  At home I am trying hard to reduce my carbon footprint and this is reflected in our growing range of eco products and improvements we are making to Insideout.

The start of this lockdown has made me sit down and think yet again about so many things that have a direct impact on my life.  As a small business owner Insideout is one of my first priorities alongside my family and friends.

Lockdown brings uncertainty to all of us and I have to admit this is what I personally struggle with the most.  Like everyone else out there, we don’t know what is around the corner.  However the one thing I am certain off is that you have to be proactive to survive and if you get things right, you may even thrive.

The last 10 months have provided more challenges than most of us would normally deal with in any period of time.  I am naturally a pro-active person so have faced it all head on, this at times has proven exhausting as my mind is constantly churning through lots of ideas, some good and some not so much!

What I have learnt more than anything, during this time is the value of community.  It is you, our community that have supported and helped us get to where we are today.  During our near 17 years of trading, we have never felt so supported, so a big thank you to each and every one of you out there.

Last year we started our blog, where over the coming weeks we will be working with local people and businesses to bring you some ideas, of things to do, to keep “Happy and Healthy” during lockdown. So keep visiting our blog page to see what we are up too.  Our last blog Why Bricks and Mortar Retailers like us will thrive in 2021 is well worth a read.

Many of you will know that I have been campaigning for fairness in retail, particularly during this pandemic. One of my key concerns is the

way in which Essential businesses exploit the opportunity of selling non-essential goods whilst shops like ours are closed due to the pandemic.  Anyway I won’t rant too much today, so I shall end by thanking you once again. Shop Independent whenever you can and keep safe.

Nicky
